There is some exciting news from the Thailand Cycle Tours team! After spending several days across the border in Laos scouting new cycling routes, exploring the countryside and experiencing the roads firsthand, we are excited to begin a new chapter of cycling adventures beyond Thailand.
Our team is expanding, our routes are expanding, and our cycling family is expanding too!
And the first of our new Laos adventures is officially here.
Our New Luang Prabang Self-Guided Cycling Adventure
Our brand-new Luang Prabang Self-Guided Cycling Adventure – 5 Days / 4 Nights is now available to book.
Covering approximately 195 km with 2,664 metres of climbing, the tour gives cyclists four full days on the bike, combining mountains, Mekong River crossings, gravel roads, rural villages and some unforgettable Lao landscapes.
One of the best things about travelling self-guided is the freedom it gives you. Rather than waiting for a fixed group departure, you can choose your own tour dates and experience Laos at your own pace.
What Can You Expect Cycling Around Luang Prabang?
This is a route designed for cyclists who want to see more than the main tourist areas.
Starting from the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang, the journey heads into peaceful countryside filled with rice paddies, rubber plantations, limestone karst mountains and small rural communities. Riders experience a varied combination of quiet paved roads, dirt tracks, gravel sections, rolling terrain and challenging climbs.
The route travels from Luang Prabang to Xiang Ngeun and Muang Nan, before continuing alongside the Mekong towards Kuang Si Waterfall and eventually returning to Luang Prabang.
Mountains, Gravel & Rural Laos ⛰️
The first stages take riders away from Luang Prabang and deeper into rural Laos.
Expect beautiful mountain roads, scenic lakes, countryside and some demanding climbing. On the first cycling day, several shorter climbs reach gradients of 10–17%, rewarded by spectacular views across the limestone karst mountains. The following day brings a rolling, roller-coaster-style ride through quieter mountain landscapes towards Muang Nan.
Follow the Mighty Mekong 🌊
One of the experiences we are particularly excited about is cycling beside — and crossing — the Mekong River.
The third cycling stage follows dirt and gravel tracks through remote countryside alongside the Mekong, passing small communities before reaching the spectacular Kuang Si Waterfall.
The adventure continues the following day when riders board a local long-tail boat with their bikes to cross the Mekong. The route then combines dirt and paved roads, an iron suspension bridge and the opportunity to stop at a traditional pottery village before another local ferry crossing brings you back into Luang Prabang.
It is exactly the kind of experience we want our new Laos tours to offer: cycling that isn’t simply about reaching the next destination, but about experiencing the landscapes and local life along the way.
Self-Guided, But With Support
Self-guided doesn’t mean you are completely on your own.
The tour includes hand-picked accommodation, navigation with GPX files and a PDF roadbook, useful bike accessories and local support via WhatsApp during your tour. Optional extras such as airport transfers, luggage transfers and bike upgrades are also available.
This allows you to enjoy the independence of a self-guided cycling holiday while still having the organisation and support behind your adventure.

Our 5-day Luang Prabang adventure is just the beginning of our expansion into Laos.
Following our recent route scouting, our team is also working on more exciting cycling experiences for the future.
We are currently developing longer 10–12 day Laos group cycling tours, which we hope to introduce for late 2027/2028, giving riders the opportunity to travel further and experience even more of the country by bike.
We’re also working on a shorter 6-day Luang Prabang group tour, with more information and future departure dates to be announced.
These upcoming tours are still being developed and confirmed, but we can’t wait to share more as our Laos programme grows.
