How We Scout a New Cycling Route

A memorable cycling holiday begins long before the first guest gets on a bike. At Thailand Cycle Tours, it starts with getting out on the road, exploring an area, and understanding what a route will feel like for the people riding it.

From Northern Thailand to Southern Thailand, and now as we expand into Laos, scouting is an important part of developing our cycling tours. Our team has also recently travelled to China to scout potential cycling routes, exploring possibilities for future adventures.

Led by our owner and professional cyclist, Mr Lucien Kirch, these scouting trips bring our guides together to assess routes firsthand. We look beyond the distance on a map to consider the riding experience and the practical details that make a cycling day work.

Why We Scout Cycling Routes Firsthand

A map is a useful starting point, but it cannot tell us everything. A quiet-looking road might carry more traffic than expected, a climb might be more demanding than its distance suggests, or a beautiful stretch might offer few suitable places to stop.

Scouting helps us understand these details before we build a route into a tour. It gives us the opportunity to consider road conditions, terrain, traffic, and how different sections connect.

We also think about the rhythm of the day. Where would a break make sense? Which sections deserve more time? Does the route offer a rewarding balance of cycling, scenery, and opportunities to explore?

These questions help turn a possible route into a thoughtful cycling experience.

Exploring Northern and Southern Thailand

Our scouting takes us across Northern and Southern Thailand, where different landscapes create very different riding experiences.

In the north, we explore routes through countryside and mountainous areas, considering how climbs, descents, and changing terrain will shape each day. In the south, we investigate coastal roads and inland connections, looking at how to bring together enjoyable riding and interesting places along the way.

For our Thailand cycling tours, the aim is to find routes that help guests experience the places they travel through. The road itself matters, but so do the surroundings, the stops, and the sense of discovery.

Scouting as a Team

We scout with our guides because developing a cycling route benefits from more than one perspective.

Mr Lucien Kirch brings his experience as a professional cyclist and tour owner. Our guides contribute their observations about leading a group, managing the day, and helping guests along the route.

Together, we discuss the demands of each section and the arrangements a tour would need. A route must work for the whole group, with suitable opportunities to regroup, rest, and receive support.

This shared approach also helps our team become familiar with a destination before welcoming guests.

Expanding Our Cycling Adventures into Laos

As Thailand Cycle Tours expands into Laos, we bring the same approach to exploring new routes: visit in person, assess the riding, and consider how the journey will work for our guests.

Scouting gives us time to learn about the roads and the places they connect. It also helps us identify the practical arrangements needed to develop a cycling experience in a new destination.

Each trip adds to our understanding and helps us make informed decisions about the routes we offer.

Our Recent Route Scouting in China

Our team’s recent scouting trip to China was another opportunity to explore new cycling possibilities.

Travelling there firsthand allowed us to investigate potential routes and consider their suitability for future tours. Scouting is an exploratory step, and each visit helps us understand what further planning a destination may require.

For us, discovering a promising road is the beginning of the process. Developing it into a tour takes careful consideration and preparation.

From Scouting Trip to Cycling Holiday

Behind every new route is a series of observations, discussions, and decisions. We consider cycling alongside the daily logistics, accommodation, stops, and support arrangements that help bring a journey together.

That preparation is part of what we do at Thailand Cycle Tours: explore the roads ourselves, learn as a team, and use that knowledge to create rewarding cycling holidays.
